As an aside, I have personally researched maybe 30-40 different mitts and sponges in the course of our search for products, and there is no right or wrong... it's what works for you. Here's a quick pros and cons of the major types of wash implement:

SPONGE

Pros - holds a lot of water, can be soft, you can see dirt on the surface to remove it, easy to maintain

Cons - can trap dirt on the surface, plus open cell foams allow dirt migration INTO the sponge; far from a good thing IMO, as it means the dirt can often pop out when you don't want it to mid-stroke and cause a mark (natural foams are open cell and also have the added danger of sand and coral particles within their mass, if wild and not farmed)

SYNTHETIC MITT

Pros - have pile so dirt can be migrated away from the paint surface; easy to maintain

Cons - if not checked or removed, dirt may migrate back to the surface unchecked; some mitts may not hold as much water as sponges etc; may not be as soft as you'd like

NATURAL MITT

Pros - have pile so dirt can migrate away

Cons - longer the pile, the more difficult maintenance can be, plus they can rot; dirt left in the pile may return to the surface; it can be difficult to remove ideeply held dirt during a wash, unlike a sponge

CHAMOIS

Pro - holds a lot of water, can be soft when wet

Cons - no pile, so dirt can be trapped against the surface

That's why we have things like the Basics wash pad, which performs well at a low price - it has soft pile, but it's not too deep, so a good compromise between the pile keeping dirt away and the difficulty therein of removing it or guarding against its unforeseen return. We then have the wookie, as the ultimate in pile length, but it is hard to maintain and needs combing... And the new ultra-soft 110ppi Supernatural Sponge, made from closed cell foam that's the softest on the market (passes CD test etc). Whilst it may trap dirt on the surface, you'll see it and it can't migrate into it that far. It also holds loads of water because the pores are so dense. Whilst in between, we have the Tribble Mitt for general duties (a classic sheepskin number) and the Captain Crevice for wheels (doesn't hold enough water for normal use, really, but some like it for bodywork, too).
